Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Anantrao Pawar’s educational and academic journey laid the foundation for his political career. His limited formal education, combined with a strong sense of social responsibility, played a key role in shaping him into one of the state’s most influential political leaders.
Beginning of School Education : Ajit Pawar was born on July 22, 1959, in Deolali Pravara, a village in Rahuri Taluka of Ahmednagar district, which is his maternal home. He completed his primary education in the same village. He later studied from 5th to 10th standard at the Maharashtra Education Society High School in Baramati.
Challenges in Higher Education : After passing his 10th standard, Ajit Pawar moved to Mumbai for higher studies. However, following the sudden demise of his father, he was compelled to discontinue his education and return to Baramati to shoulder family responsibilities.
The Start of a Political Journey : After returning home, Ajit Pawar became actively involved in the cooperative and social sectors. He played key roles in dairy unions, sugar factories, cooperative banks, and other institutions. In 1991, he contested and won the Lok Sabha elections from the Baramati constituency. Thereafter, he shifted to state politics, getting elected as an MLA seven times and holding several important ministerial portfolios in Maharashtra.
Honorary Doctorate : In recognition of his contribution to society and politics, DY Patil University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree in 2023.
