Pune: Hosts Pune along with defending champions Kolhapur, runners-up Nagpur and Mumbai stormed into the quarterfinals of the Western India Football Association (WIFA) Inter District Men’s (Open) Football Tournament 2022 at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Mhalunge-Balewadi, on Friday.
The tournament hosted by the Poona District Football Association (PDFA) saw Kolhapur emerge as the only team to record a double-digit win. Pune, Nagpur and Mumbai relatively had an easy day out and accounted for 28 goals amongst themselves.
Playing their second match in as many days, Pune impressed with a 6-1 win over Dhule after trailing for a minute when Devidas Sonawane (18th) gave the hosts a scare. After trailing, it was Sumit Bhandari who led the way with a three-goal effort. Sumit (19th) opened the scoring and help Pune level 1-1 at half-time. He then netted twice (45th, 69th) in the second-half, while Sudeesh M (65th, 73rd), Prateek Patil (80+2) accounted for the rest of the tally. Dhule cut the margin through (Devidas Sonawane (18th)
On the other ground, Mumbal spanked Jalgaon 6-0 with Himanshu Patil (2nd, 5th) leading the way. Mumbai began aggressively scoring thrice in five minutes. Himanshu’s brace and an ‘own goal’ by Suraj Sapke (4th) swelled the scoreline to 3-0 early. Ashley Koli (19th), Umesh Perambra (36th) made it 5-0 at half-time before Johnson Mathew (68th) rounded off the tally.
Defending champs Kolhapur thrashed Nashik 10-1 with Karan Chavan (23rd, 45th, 67th, 75th) emerging the hero after Rohan Adnaik (12th) opened the scoring. Rushikesh Methe (53rd, 68th), Omkar Ratic (63rd), Prathamesh Herekar (65th) and Prabhu Pawar (70th) completed the tally.
Meanwhile, Nagpur ended the challenge of Palghar 6-0 aided by a three-goal effort by Sufiyan Sheikh (39th, 73rd 80+4), a brace by Abid Sheikh (5th, 11th) and P.Thushal (77th).
Other teams reaching the quarterfinals were; Parbhani who had the single strike by Mohammed Siddhiqui (34th) knock out Nanded 1-0, Solapur downed Ratnagiri 2-0 with goals from Varun Bhandari (25th) and Altmash (28th). Aurangabad fought off Thane 2-1 after Rohit (70th) goal turned out the winner. Sangli joined in registering a 4-2 tiebreaker win over Satara after playing out eighty-minutes goalless
