Sahyadri Hospital today announced a significant milestone with the successful completion of over 750 Microvascular Decompression (MVD) procedures over the past five years. MVD is a recognised surgical intervention used in the management of specific cranial nerve compression syndromes, including trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and hemifacial spasm.
The cumulative experience of Sahyadri Hospital’s neurosurgical team, led by Neurosurgeon Dr. Jaydev Panchawagh, includes more than 2,700 MVD procedures performed over approximately 22 years.
The hospital noted that patients have accessed these specialised services from across India as well as from international locations.
Available international literature indicates that MVD is typically performed in selected, specialised centres, with varying annual volumes reported globally.
Sahyadri Hospital states that its annual case volumes are comparatively higher than many reported averages; however, all treatment decisions remain individualised and are undertaken following comprehensive clinical evaluation.
Dr. Jaydev Panchawagh highlighted that conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia are often initially managed through medication, and awareness regarding surgical options may vary among patients and referring practitioners. It emphasised the importance of timely diagnosis, appropriate referral and informed clinical decision-making in line with established medical guidelines.Outcomes in neurosurgery depend on multiple factors, including patient condition, timing of intervention, and adherence to standard treatment protocols, and individual results may vary.
Sharing insights from clinical practice, the hospital cited cases reflecting the complexity and potential of advanced neurosurgical care. In one instance, a patient diagnosed with a high cervical spinal tumour—considered among the most challenging due to its proximity to critical neural structures—underwent a complex procedure and progressed to walking independently. In another case, a dentist diagnosed with a large and complex brain tumour underwent surgery that preserved essential cognitive and motor functions; within weeks, the patient resumed creative work, completing a detailed oil painting.
With 750 procedures completed and a growing body of clinical experience, Pune is steadily emerging as a destination for patients seeking advanced neurosurgical care for complex neurological disorders.
