WhatsApp Won’t Work Without SIM from March 1: Government Refuses Deadline Extension; Web Version to Log Out Every 6 Hours

New Delhi: The central government’s new “SIM-binding” rule will come into effect from March 1, 2026, and the deadline will not be extended, officials confirmed. Under the new regulation, messaging apps such as WhatsApp will not function if the registered SIM card is not present in the mobile phone. Additionally, WhatsApp Web on computers will automatically log out every six hours.

The government said the move aims to strengthen national security and prevent cyber fraud.

What is SIM-binding?

SIM-binding links a messaging app to the user’s registered SIM card. The app will work only if the same SIM is active in the phone. If the SIM is removed, the app may stop functioning. This is intended to curb hacking, SIM cloning, and fake account usage.

When will the rule apply?

The rule will be implemented from March 1, 2026. Users must ensure that the SIM associated with their WhatsApp account remains in the same device.

Why was the deadline not extended?

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that there is no plan to extend the deadline, emphasizing that the rule is necessary for national security and fraud prevention.

Impact on users

  • WhatsApp may stop working if the SIM is removed from the phone.

  • WhatsApp Web sessions will log out automatically every six hours.

  • Multi-device usage may become more restrictive for some users.

Industry concerns

The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has warned that frequent log-outs could affect professionals who rely on WhatsApp Web for work. Families sharing a single account across devices may also face inconvenience.

What if companies fail to comply?

Companies have been asked to submit compliance reports within 120 days. Failure to follow the rules could invite action under the Telecommunications Act 2023 and related cyber security regulations.
