“Women’s Sacrifice Enabled Men’s Success” – Dr. Aruna Dhere Urmilatai Karad Auditorium Inaugurated at MIT ADT

Pune: “Just like the verses, ‘Sawalaga ga Ramchandra, tyache anuj he teen, majhya bhagyachya oviche he chaar akhand charan…’ the women of India’s tolerant and spiritual tradition have always carried their families forward without expecting anything in return. The late Urmilatai Karad was one such exemplary woman. In the past, even though women were often uneducated, they were intelligent and talented. They made tremendous sacrifices for their families and built their homes with resilience. While men ventured out to fulfill their dreams, it was the capable hands of women that kept homes running smoothly—making it possible for men to find success and prosperity,” said noted Marathi litterateur and former president of the All India Marathi Literary Conference, Dr. Aruna Dhere.

She was speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed ‘Urmilatai Karad Auditorium’ at the MIT Art, Design and Technology (MIT ADT) University campus in Vishwarajbaug, Pune.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Prof. Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad, Founder President of MAEER’s MIT Group of Institutions; Padma Shri awardee and film journalist Bhawana Somaaya; renowned poet and author Indrajeet Bhalerao; Prof. Dr. Mangesh Karad, Executive President of MIT ADT University; Tulshiram Karad, Kashiram Karad, Prof. Dr. Rajesh S., Vice Chancellor of MIT ADT; Mrs. Jyoti A. Dhakane, Dr. Suchitra U. Nagare, and Mrs. Poonam A. Nagargoje, among others.

Dr. Aruna Dhere fondly recalled her interactions with the late Urmilatai Karad at poetess Shantabai Shelke’s residence in Alandi. “Her poetry collections reflected themes of motherhood, affection, and spiritual heritage, especially from the Warkari tradition. Naming this magnificent auditorium after her ensures that her memory and values remain alive among us,” she added.

Dr. Mangesh Karad paid tribute by saying, “Urmila Kaki was a true embodiment of sacrifice. Her dedication shaped us as individuals. The prosperity of the Karad family today is a direct result of her blessings and tireless efforts. Even while managing the household, she authored nine books. This auditorium will ensure that her legacy inspires future generations.”

Padma Shri Bhawana Somaaya also praised Urmilatai’s contributions and admired the architectural design of the auditorium. Poet Indrajeet Bhalerao delivered a heartfelt poetic tribute highlighting the sacrifices of women for their families. He ended his speech with an emotional poem dedicated to Urmilatai, which moved the audience deeply.

The event also featured the release of Bhawana Somaaya’s new book ‘Farewell Karachi’, based on the partition of India.

The program began with a World Peace Prayer, with the welcome address delivered by Dr. V. D. Pingale of the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad. Dr. Suchitra Karad-Nagare expressed gratitude, and Dr. Ashok Ghughe compered the event. The program concluded with the recitation of the Pasaydan.
